Attitudes: Good & Bad
Attitudes: Good & Bad
There are certain attitudes that you can find as you walk up and down the halls near the offices of the C suite. Conversely, there are some attitudes that you’ll never see walking the very same halls. How you carry yourself and the attitude you carry with you has a lot more to do with your level of success than you might think.
Here are some positive attitudes to maintain and foster, and a few negative attitudes you should stay away from, in fact, run.
Positive:
1. “I have total control over my career.”
If you spend your days, weeks and months waiting for things to happen, you’re going to be waiting a long time. The successful people in business make things happen. They commit to a goal, set a plan of action in place to achieve that goal and work their plan. Success is no accident.
2. “Anyone can potentially be a key contact.”
Sure, you want to be aggressive, (and that’s fine) but remember to be courteous to those around you. Be friendly. Be nice. You never know when you’re going to need to ask for something from that office assistant or HR or anyone for that matter.
3. “I am the right person for this job and the one above me.”
When I was in the Army, my Platoon Sergeant taught me early on that I had to learn my job and
4. “The road to success is paved with… Failure.”
When I was a kid, my father used to tell me, “Ed, Babe Ruth was the homerun king but he was also the strikeout king, bla, bla, bla…” I was a kid; I didn’t know what he was talking about. But as I got older I realized its okay to fail from time to time. Everything you do can’t be perfect. When you fail, you can use it as a learning tool. Failures help you grow. Appreciate your failures.
5. “My opportunity radar is always up.”
Successful people are always looking for ways to improve. Keep your eyes open for new challenges and opportunities. You never know when you’ll find the one that changes your career.
Negative:
1. “When I get promoted, I’ll do all the things successful people do.”
No, no, no! You have it backwards. You have to demonstrate that you can do the work long before you’re considered for the position. Show your boss what you’re made of.
2. “I’ll take on every responsibility and do everything because I want people to see I have a can-do attitude.”
That’s great, but remember, you’re only human. There is only so much that you can do. It’s far better to commit to less and do a great job at those things than to commit to everything and do a poor job at them all.
3. “I’m going to stick with it until I succeed.”
This sounds like a great attitude but if you’re not careful you could spend all your time in the wrong areas. Focus on what you do best and work on the things that you don’t. Not the other way around.
4. “I’m a perfectionist.”
That sounds great, but you better be able to meet deadlines. When my team turns in their weekly numbers on Monday morning, I don’t care if it looks pretty. I care if it’s on my desk Monday morning.
5. “I don’t have time to schmooze and build rapport.”
You might want to find some. Isolation is great if you’re a hermit crab but this is business. And business is all about people. If you aren’t around people, you severely limit the amount of information you receive and influence you can gain. You’d be surprised at what you can do today because of the cup of coffee you had with a manager six months ago.
